A perennial shrubby flowering plant in the coffee family Rubiaceae, Psychotria viridis is also known as Chacruna, chacrona, or chaqruy in the Quechua languages. It is closely related to the Ecuadorian Psychotria carthagenensis, often known as samiruka or amiruca. It is one half of ayahuasca, a decoction that has a long history of entheogenic (connection to spirit) use among the Indigenous peoples of the Amazon jungle. Ayahuasca is also known as the "plant teacher" among these peoples.
